A medical training device helping develop ultrasound scanning skills throughout the world.

MedaPhor ScanTrainer

The Challenge

GX was approached by MedaPhor, a global provider of advanced ultrasound training aids, to design cost effective components for one of their medical devices – ScanTrainer™ . This medical training device uses advanced haptic sensations to teach doctors and sonographers vital ultrasound scanning skills without the need of a patient and with minimal expert supervision.

The Solution

Building upon the experience gained from designing earlier Medaphor products, the design team at GX developed new plastic components to suit more advanced haptic technology. To help Medaphor keep production costs low, the product development team also value engineered a new manufacturing process to allow future production to be carried out with virtually no tooling.

The Result

The product design that design engineers at GX developed has been well received by medical intuitions worldwide since it went into production in January 2014. In a recent study by Copenhagen University Hospital in April 2104 to assess the performance of 16 ultrasound novices and 12 experienced obstetrics and gynaecology consultants, the study concluded that using the ScanTrainer™ had greatly accelerated ultrasound scanning skills.
